E.M.P.I.R.E Foundation LLC Supports Incarcerated Mothers on Mother's Day
Mother’s Day holds profound significance for Jen Szénay of Michigan, whose decades-long separation from her mother due to incarceration was finally bridged last March.
In 1990, Szénay’s mother received a life sentence for her alleged involvement in a murder-for-hire case, a tragic consequence of domestic abuse that went unrecognized by the legal system. Despite maintaining her innocence, Szénay’s mother endured years of separation until she was granted a commutation by the governor.
Reflecting on their emotional reunion after 30 years apart, Szénay expressed the overwhelming joy tempered by the shock of their long-awaited reunion. “We had been apart since May 24, 1990,” Szénay shared, highlighting the profound impact of the separation.
As the communications coordinator for the Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration, Szénay advocates for second-chance legislation, aiming to facilitate the reintegration of individuals serving long prison sentences back into society. Such legislation, if enacted, would allow incarcerated individuals deemed no longer posing a risk to petition for a reduction in their sentences.
In addition to fostering societal reintegration, second-chance legislation promises substantial economic benefits. With annual prison costs averaging between $34,000 and $48,000 per person, researchers estimate potential savings of up to $200 million per year. These savings could be reinvested in vital areas such as violence prevention, victim services, and mental health support.
Szénay emphasized the disproportionate impact of excessive prison sentences on vulnerable populations, including victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking. By reevaluating such cases, society can rectify injustices and ensure fair and equitable treatment within the legal system.
EMPIRE Foundation LLC stands in solidarity with incarcerated mothers like Szénay’s, advocating for compassionate and rehabilitative approaches to criminal justice. This Mother’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting initiatives that promote healing, restoration, and opportunities for redemption for all individuals affected by incarceration.
